Traditional Floating Shelf FAQs

Each shelf's weight capacity depends on its size, depth, and how it's installed. With our Aksel HD floating shelf bracket, shelves can support up to 90 lbs per rod, which means a typical shelf mounted into studs can hold 180 lbs or more. The longer the shelf, the more rods on the bracket equals more capacity.

Yes. For floating shelves to perform at their full weight capacity, they must be installed into solid structural material—typically wood studs or masonry. Drywall alone won’t provide the support needed for safe or lasting installation.

All Shelfology traditional floating shelves are made from furniture-grade hardwoods. Standard species include white oak, walnut, maple, cherry, mahogany and alder, with optional custom species available upon request. Each wood type is available in multiple finishes, from natural to premier stains and paints.

Yes, Shelfology floating shelves are designed to install cleanly over finished walls, including drywall, plaster, tile, or paneling. What matters most is what’s behind the finished wall. You’ll still need to anchor the bracket into solid structural material like wood studs or masonry to get the strength and weight capacity the system is built for.

LED shelves must be anchored into wall studs or solid masonry—just like our standard shelves. Installing directly into drywall without structural support will significantly reduce weight capacity and compromise performance. For a secure, long-lasting install, always anchor into something solid.

Traditional floating shelves are available in depths from 6" to 14", depending on your storage and styling needs. All shelves are made to measure and built to spec—down to the 1/8".

  • 6–8 inches: Great for lightweight styling like small decor, picture frames, candles, or spice jars
  • 9–10 inches: Ideal for dishes, books, medium vases, or folded towels
  • 11–12 inches: Best for functional storage zones—like cookbooks, stacked plates, or larger decorative pieces

Need something deeper? We recommend exploring our Aksel Hollow Core shelf system, designed for greater depth without added weight.
