Product Details

What does "rod holes for set screws" mean on my bracket order? Do I need them?

Rod Holes are Small diameter holes that we can drill into the tops of the round rods that extend out from the flat back bar of the bracket. They are placed 1-1/2" from the front face of the backbar. Rod holes allow you to send a screw through the top of the shelf down into the bracket rods. This effectively locks your shelf to the bracket and strengthens the entire installation. They are NOT necessary, but definitely recommended. If you choose to not use them, we recommend that you use an alternative way to fix the shelf to the bracket, like an adhesive applied inside the large holes in the shelf the bracket rods slide into. Liquid nails or silicone both work great.

What should I use to secure my wood to the bracket rods if I am not using set screws?

We recommend using a Kitchen and Bath Silicone or liduid nails construction adhesive. Just squeeze either onto the top of the bracket rods before you slide the shelf on or into the Bracket holes in the shelf. The silicone has a semi-permanent set, and in the event that you need to move the shelf, you can work the wood off of the bracket. Liquid nails is more permanent and rigid. Either are effective and readily available.

What is the weight capacity for my shelf?

Your shelf's weight capacity will vary depending on its bracket size, shelf thickness, depth and length. To find the weight capacity, visit the individual product pages and view the spec sheets. Weight capacity is listed by number of rods for Aksel brackets and shelf systems. It is listed by linear foot for metal shelving. In order to ensure minimum holding power, please make sure that your bracket or metal shelving is installed into at least 2 studs MINIMUM. Weight capacity is maximixed by securing every screw hole along the length of the bracket into a solid substrate like wood blocking or masonry.

Do I need to worry about installing a metal shelf above my fireplace? Can it withstand the heat?

All of our metal shelves are powder coated through a process that heats them up to 360 degrees, which means they can handle heat. However, we do not recommend that our powder coated shelves be placed in very close proximity to CONSTANT high heat. Some colors may be susceptible to color change or other issues as you would expect with vapors, smoke and high heat hitting anything for extended periods of time. We recommend you follow your fireplace installation guide for placement of any shelves or mantels near the unit. In our experience there is a safe zone that fireplace manufacturers recommend where TVs, and other sensitive items may be placed in proximity to a fireplace without damaging them—even directly above.

Are all of your powder coat colors glossy finish?

No. All of our standard powders colors are matte, with the exception of white and black. They are available in both matte and gloss. We encourage you to order swatches since the color you are seeing on your monitor is rarely accurate. If you're looking for a different color or finish please reachout to our Shelf Geeks and they can help you with a custom order.
