Deco: A Modular Shelving System, Floor-Supported and Wall-Anchored

Deco is Shelfology's modular etagere: a shelving system built from powder-coated steel and solid hardwood in two heights (the full-height, 86-inch 6-Shelf and the 59-inch 4-Shelf), and the first system in our catalog that leverages both wall attachment and floor support for weight distribution. Start with a single bay on one accent wall, run four bays across a full room, and add bays later as your storage needs grow. Every configuration uses the same steel uprights, curved brackets, and 36-inch hardwood shelves, so a wall of Deco reads as one continuous system instead of stacked separate pieces, whether it went up all at once or one bay at a time.

That combination is rarer than it looks. Most modular shelving built at this scale is wall-mounted alone, or built entirely from steel. Deco does both at once: real floor support, plus solid hardwood shelves, in the same system.

The Materials: Solid Hardwood and Powder-Coated Steel

Solid Hardwood: White Oak and Walnut

Every Deco shelf comes in solid White Oak or Walnut, ¾ inches thick: not a veneer over particleboard, but the same board all the way through. White Oak Clear runs in a neutral, milky-yellow tone with grain that stays visible under a clear finish. Walnut Clear is darker and warmer, with a richer, more colorful wood grain that features distinct color patterns and character. No wonder it's the species Shelfology customers choose most often across our whole catalog! Like all hardwoods, White Oak and Walnut age beautifully. Scratches sand out, and you can refinish a shelf instead of replacing it.

Powder-Coated Steel

The uprights and curved brackets are powder-coated steel — the color is baked-on and fused to the metal, not sprayed over it. That's why it resists chips and scratches far better than paint. Deco comes in six finishes: Matte White, Black Matte, Army Brat, Steely Blue, Honey Mustard, and Claymore. The uprights carry Deco's weight down to the floor and anchor it to the wall; the curved brackets are what the shelves actually rest on.

Deco and Shelfology: One Design Language

Deco's six steel finishes are the exact colors used across the rest of the Shelfology Furniture line: not a close match, the same powder coat, run the same way. If a room already has a Steely Blue shoe rack or an Army Brat side table, a Deco system in the same color sits next to it without a seam. See the Furniture collection for the rest of the palette in action.

Which Deco Configuration Fits Your Wall

Sizing Deco comes down to two choices: how tall, then how wide.

Choose Your Height: Deco 6-Shelf or Deco 4-Shelf

  • Deco 6-Shelf (86″): Six 36-inch shelves per bay in a full-height profile, for library walls, growing record collections, and anywhere shelf count matters most.
  • Deco 4-Shelf (59″): Four 36-inch shelves per bay. The top shelf doubles as a display surface, and the wall above stays open for art, a mirror, or a row of floating shelves.

Both heights use the same solid White Oak or Walnut shelves, the same six powder-coat steel finishes, and the same floor-supported, wall-anchored design.

Choose Your Width: Single, Double, Triple, or Quad Bay

Start with the wall you're filling today. Match its width to a configuration:

  • 40¾″ — Filling a single accent wall, roughly 3½ feet wide? Single Bay is the entry point: six shelves on the 6-Shelf or four on the 4-Shelf, ready to grow into a longer run later.
  • 78½″ — Covering a media wall or reading nook, closer to 6½ feet? Double Bay runs twelve shelves (6-Shelf) or eight (4-Shelf) across two bays.
  • 116¼″ — Filling something close to a 9½-foot run (a library wall, a long hallway)? Triple Bay covers eighteen shelves (6-Shelf) or twelve (4-Shelf) across three bays.
  • 154″ — Turning an entire wall into storage, at 12¾ feet or more? Quad Bay runs twenty-four shelves (6-Shelf) or sixteen (4-Shelf) across all four bays.

Every configuration uses the same steel uprights, curved brackets, and 36-inch shelves: sizing up changes how much wall Deco covers, not what the system is.

Adding Bays to an Installed Deco System

Deco is designed to expand after it's on the wall. An add-on bay extends an existing run sideways by about 37¾ inches (six more shelves on the 6-Shelf, four more on the 4-Shelf), built from the same steel and hardwood as the original, so a Single Bay installed this year can become a Double or Triple later without replacing anything already mounted.

Four bays is where the standard configurations stop, not where the system does. Add-on bays keep tiling across the wall for as long as the wall runs, so you can size Deco to your budget now and to your collection later.

How Deco Mounts: Floor Support Plus Wall Anchors

Deco's steel uprights run all the way to the floor, not just to a bracket hidden inside the shelf. That's what sets a floor-supported, wall-anchored system apart from every other kind of modular shelving. Because the floor carries part of the load, a 6-Shelf Deco runs a full 86 inches, top to bottom, without requiring a handful of wall anchors to carry it alone. Both a Drywall and a Masonry anchor kit are available at checkout, matched to the wall you're installing into.

Shelfology's floating shelf lines, Aksel and Tromso, work differently: they mount to the wall alone, with the support hidden inside the shelf, built to disappear. Deco does the opposite on purpose. The uprights and curved brackets stay visible, and that visibility is the tradeoff for a system that stands on the floor and carries real, sustained weight across a full wall, without the wall doing all the work alone.

Deco Modular Shelving, Room by Room

A Full-Height Bookshelf Wall for the Living Room

The most common wall for Deco is also the simplest: a living room that needs full shelf count instead of a handful of decorative ledges. A Triple or Quad Bay run of the 6-Shelf turns a blank wall into a library-scale system, with books within easy reach on the lower shelves and the upper shelves reserved for what you'd rather look at than reach for (the archive boxes, the things you kept for a reason). At a full 86 inches, it uses most of the wall's height instead of stopping at eye level, the way a lot of living room shelving does. Rather keep the wall above open? The 4-Shelf tops out at 59 inches, so its top shelf works as a display surface for a lamp, a plant, or a framed print, with room overhead for art or a mirror.

Vinyl Record Storage Shelves for a Growing Collection

A record collection outgrows its shelf faster than anyone plans for. Deco grows with it. Start with a Single or Double Bay, then add a bay each time the crates start stacking up on the floor. Every bay holds full album rows on 36-inch shelves (six per bay on the 6-Shelf, four on the 4-Shelf), and because each shelf is ¾-inch solid hardwood rather than a thin veneer, a fully loaded wall stays flat year after year instead of bowing under the weight.

Open Kitchen Shelving for Cookbooks and Serveware

In an open kitchen, Deco belongs on the dry-goods side, away from the stove and the sink and out of the moisture zone. Cookbooks, serveware, glassware, and the everyday dishware that doesn't have to sit behind a cabinet door all have a place across the shelves. Because the system features both floor support and wall anchors, a fully loaded run of stoneware and cast iron never rests its whole weight on a handful of wall anchors, the way it would on a floating shelf.

Home Bar and Coffee Bar Shelving for Bottles and Glassware

A floating shelf over a bar cart works fine for a few glasses, but a full bar wall (bottles, glassware, the espresso setup you swore was temporary) is a different weight class. Because Deco's uprights run to the floor instead of cantilevering everything off the wall, a Double or Triple Bay behind a bar or coffee station can carry real weight without the sag a lighter-duty floating shelf gets under the same load over time.

A Plant Shelf Wall Built to Hold Mature, Heavy Pots

Potted plants are deceptively heavy. A few gallons of soil per pot add up fast across a run of shelves, especially at the larger sizes people actually want for a real plant wall. A floating shelf carries all of that off a handful of wall anchors; Deco splits it between the floor and the wall instead, which matters more here than almost anywhere else Deco gets used. A Single or Double Bay near a window becomes a plant wall built to hold mature, heavy pots: the kind that outgrow anything lighter-duty.

A Trade Option for Retail, Hospitality, and Showroom Walls

Deco is also eligible for Shelfology's Trade Program, which matters for a narrower but real audience: boutique retail, hospitality, and showroom buyers who need a floor-supported, wall-anchored system at scale rather than a single residential wall. A multi-room buildout can spec Deco the same way a homeowner does, with the same finishes and the same configurations, just across many walls instead of one. And because add-on bays keep tiling past four, a long retail or lobby wall can run as one continuous system instead of several separate units butted together.

What to Know Before You Order

  • Choose your height before your width. The 6-Shelf stands 86 inches with six shelves per bay; the 4-Shelf stands 59 inches with four. Check ceiling height and anything mounted on the wall above before ordering.
  • Deco anchors to both the floor and the wall. That's what lets it carry more weight than a wall-mounted shelf alone. Choose the Drywall or Masonry anchor kit that matches your wall at checkout.
  • Deco expands after installation. Order the configuration that fits your wall today, then extend the run with add-on bays as your storage grows. Each bay adds about 37¾ inches, so measure the open wall beside your system before planning the next one.
  • Custom sizes and finishes are available by quote. If your wall or your palette falls outside the four standard configurations, a Shelf Geek can scope the build with you and get it priced.
  • Calling all designers, architects, and builders: Deco qualifies for Trade Program discounts, with the same finishes and configurations available across as many walls as the project needs.
  • Deco is built to order in Shelfology's Idaho shop, not pulled from a warehouse. Every configuration is made to order in 30 days: cut, powder-coated, and assembled specifically for it. Allow additional time for delivery.
  • Every Deco system is built specifically for your order, which puts it in Shelfology's made-to-order category under the Shipping & Returns Policy and outside the standard return window. Manufacturing defects are covered separately, under warranty.
  • Deco needs a level floor to install correctly, since the uprights carry real weight down to the ground. Check your floor before ordering, and use thin shims under the base to correct minor unevenness if needed.

Deco Modular Shelving System FAQ

Is Deco an etagere?

Yes. "Etagere" is the general term for a tiered, open shelving unit, and Deco fits it: Shelfology's own version, built as a modular, floor-supported and wall-anchored system in steel and solid hardwood, rather than the single freestanding piece the word usually calls to mind.

Is the Deco Modular Shelving System a floating shelf?

No. A floating shelf mounts to the wall alone, with its support hidden inside the shelf. Deco's steel uprights run from the floor up to the shelf brackets, so the floor carries part of the load too. It's a different mounting system, built for a different scale of storage.

What's the difference between the Deco 6-Shelf and 4-Shelf?

Height and shelf count. The Deco 6-Shelf stands 86 inches tall with six 36-inch shelves per bay in a full-height profile. The Deco 4-Shelf stands 59 inches tall with four 36-inch shelves per bay, leaving the wall above it open. Both come in Single, Double, Triple, and Quad Bay configurations, with the same solid White Oak or Walnut shelves and the same six powder-coat steel finishes.

How many bays do I need for my wall?

It depends on the width you're working with: Single Bay covers about 3½ feet (40¾″), Double Bay about 6½ feet (78½″), Triple Bay about 9½ feet (116¼″), and Quad Bay close to 12¾ feet (154″). Measure the wall first and start with the configuration that fits it today. You can extend the run with add-on bays later.

What wood and finish options does Deco come in?

Shelves come in White Oak Clear or Walnut Clear, both solid hardwood, ¾ inches thick. The steel uprights and brackets come in six powder-coat finishes: Matte White, Black Matte, Army Brat, Steely Blue, Honey Mustard, and Claymore.

Will Deco work on my wall type?

Yes, on drywall or masonry: both anchor kits are available to choose at checkout, matched to the wall you're installing into.

Can I add a bay to my Deco system after it's installed?

Yes. Deco is designed to expand after installation. An add-on bay extends an existing run by about 37¾ inches (six shelves on the 6-Shelf, four on the 4-Shelf), so a Single Bay can grow into a Double, Triple, or longer run without replacing anything already on the wall. There's no cap at four bays: add-on bays keep tiling for as long as your wall runs.

Can I get a custom size or color?

Yes. Deco is available in custom configurations and finishes by quote. It isn't part of the standard add-to-cart flow, so reach out to a Shelf Geek to scope it rather than looking for it in the size selector.

Is Deco returnable?

No. Deco is made to order for your specific configuration, which puts it in the non-returnable, made-to-spec category under Shelfology's Shipping & Returns Policy. Manufacturing defects are covered by warranty regardless.

Is Deco the same as a ladder shelf?

No. A ladder shelf is a small, single-unit piece that leans against the wall rather than anchoring to it, and it's generally not built to carry much weight. Deco is a floor-supported, wall-anchored system in steel and solid hardwood, built at a different scale entirely: made to carry real storage weight across a full wall, not lean decoratively in a corner.
