Here at Shelfology, we know that keeping shelves clean and organized is hard work, but it’s so worth it, dudes! Keeping a clean, well-maintained space makes your home life less stressful, but it can also boost your creativity and productivity, as we saw in this blog: Shelves in the Workplace: How Office Shelving Can Boost Productivity. But, how, you might be wondering, can anyone possibly keep up with organizing and cleaning shelving? Let’s take a look at how to get this done the right way.

How to Clean & Maintain Shelving

The first step in cleaning your shelves is to remove all of your beautiful items. This will allow you to get a good look at the shelves and to clean them thoroughly. Removing all of the items will also allow you to take inventory and remove anything that doesn’t belong. Once the items have been removed, dust the shelves with a soft cloth to remove any loose dirt or dust.

While cleaning, you should also inspect your jaw-dropping shelves for any signs of damage. If you notice any damage, repair it immediately.

If the shelves are dirty, you can clean them with a mild dish detergent and water solution. Apply the solution to a soft cloth and wipe down the shelves. Be sure to rinse the shelves thoroughly with clean water after you have cleaned them with detergent. If the shelves are made of wood, you can use a wood polish to protect them from moisture and scratches.

A simple detergent and water solution will do the trick!

How Often Should You Clean Shelves?

The best way to maintain your shelves is to clean them regularly. This will prevent dirt and dust from building up and will help to keep them looking their best. But what does regularly mean?

The frequency with which you should clean your shelves depends on a few factors, including the type of shelf, the amount of use it gets, and the environment in which it is located. In general, however, the shelf nerds here at Shelfology recommend that you clean your shelves at least once a month. If your shelves are used heavily or are located in a humid or dusty environment, you may need to clean them more often.

Keep the wood finish clean, and bid dust bunnies- be gone!

Tips for Keeping Shelves Clean & Organized

If you’re like some of us here at Shelfology, keeping items that don’t belong on your shelves off of the shelves is basically a job in and of itself. We know it’s tough to keep things organized, but there are a few tips that might help you stick to the design you’ve chosen for your shelving:

  • Make sure everything in your home has its own home
  • When you finish using something, take the extra five seconds to put it in its home
  • When you see something not in its home, put it away
  • Declutter your home and put away anything that doesn’t get used weekly
  • When things are tidy and organized, spend extra time admiring that and how it makes you feel—most people find that organization is self-motivating once they experience it
Big or small, metal or wood, your shelves are designed with superior quality to last a lifetime!
